MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT
Motor vehicle theft is one of the most common crimes committed across the world. In such cases there is much more to lose than just having a property stolen. It is becoming increasingly difficult to prevent vehicle theft. However, facts indicate that by taking steps to secure your car and making theft more difficult, you can prevent vehicle theft from happening.

• Lock all the vehicle doors and wind up all the windows.
• Do not leave keys in the ignition switch.
• Try and park at places that can be seen by the parking attendants.
• Do not leave valuables such as laptop, mobile phone, briefcase or handbag visible in the vehicle.
• Lock your motorcycle wheel with a good pad lock.
• Install and activate theft deterrent devices in your vehicle such as clutch locks, gear locks and alarms.
• Do not hand over car keys to car wash attendants or unreliable jockeys.

HOUSE BREAKING
A house is a home for family and loved ones, and a place where possessions are kept. House breaking is also the easiest to prevent because it is crime of opportunity. Guard it against break-ins for peace of mind. Practice simple crime prevention measures to minimise the risk of being a victim of housebreaking.

• Lock all doors and windows when leaving home unattended, even for a short while.
• Do not hide keys under the doormat or the flower pot.
• Change all the locks when your house keys are lost or stolen.
• Lock up any ladders, tools and equipment to prevent intruders from using them to access the house or as weapons.
• Install lamps or sensor lamps to illuminate your compounds to detect intruder.
• Cancel all deliveries (e.g. newspapers) when away from home for a few days.
• Do not leave notes outside of the house announcing your absence from home.
• Keep large sums of cash in the bank and expensive jewellery in a safe deposit box.
• Ask your immediate neighbours to keep an eye on your house while you are away.

SNATCH THEFT
Snatch thieves expect you to be off guard when they strike and they are not easy to identify because they commit their crimes in crowded places. The chances of retrieving your possessions are slim in these circumstances. You can minimise the risk of being a victim if you take up simple crime prevention measures.

• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
• Use cashless transaction such as credit cards or cheques.
• Do not flaunt cash in public view.
• Avoid wearing excessive jewellery.
• Always keep to well-lit areas.
• Avoid taking shortcuts through dark alleys or secluded areas.
• Avoid travelling alone and remain in a group, whenever possible.
• Always hold onto your handbag, do not leave it unattended at any place. Keep an eye on your belongings at all times.
• Check your wallet or handbag immediately if someone jostles or bumps into you.
• When on the streets, carry your handbags on the side away from moving traffic.
